Great At Home Anniversary Date Ideas

On April 26th, 2020 Dennis and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary. I should be writing this blog from the balcony off of a room at the Westin Resort & Spa in Cancun. But COVID had other plans for us. We were celebrating our anniversary at home.

Back in Ancient Roman or some historians says it could have been during medieval German times), the husband would adorn his wife with a silver wreath crown on their 25th wedding anniversary. On the 50th wedding anniversary, he would give her a golden wreath. By the 20th century, celebrating anniversaries every year has become commonplace as well as commercialized.

Why Do We Make A Big Deal On Our Anniversary?

Every year, (except for 2010 and now 2020), we took anywhere between 3 – 7 days flanking our anniversary to get away, relax, and reconnect. On the evening of our anniversary, we get dressed up and have a romantic elegant dinner.

We make a big deal about our anniversary, because we are marking a new milestone which is another year of continued commitment. Having the ability to go away for our anniversary is a blessing, but what’s most important is how we spend the time together… even if at home.

Ways To Celebrate Your Anniversary From Home

Your anniversary can be just as romantic (or even more) at home than if you were able to celebrate out.

1. Have a spa day. Give each other pedicures, facials, and/or massages.

Unplug from computers and phone

2 . Disconnect from your computer and phone for the day and connect with each other instead.

3 . Binge-watch movies or television series. Prepare some healthy snacks for the day.

4 . Bake your anniversary cake or dessert together. Teamwork is key for a healthy relationship!

5. Get dressed up for dinner. You may be home all day in your sweats, but this is date night. Look glamorous for your spouse!

6. Have a themed dinner. Order from a restaurant that serves the cuisine you would have if you were celebrating your anniversary away from home.

BONUS
: Did you receive china as a wedding gift? Your anniversary is a day worthy of using the good stuff!

7. Add some music and dancing to your dinner date. Not comfortable dancing in public? You can relax. It’s your party in your home.

BONUS: Did you have a first dance at your wedding? Recreate that moment.

8. Play a board or card game.

9. Get a little exercise by taking a stroll around the neighborhood after dinner. Work off that dessert.

10. Make cards for each other. What are 3 things you admire about your spouse? Use this as the basis for your card.

11. Take this time to plan for next year’s anniversary.

Do you have kids at home?

Have kids still in the house? Make your anniversary celebration a family affair. Depending on the age of your kids, they can play different roles in creating a perfect day. They can serve dinner, create the artwork for handmade cards, and participate in the games. If you have older children, they can babysit the younger ones for the day.

We had one of our best anniversaries at home. We unplugged from our computers and put the phones away for most of the day. We watched movies and picked up dinner from one of our favorite restaurants. Our son played dual role or waiter and DJ. He played slow jams from his is impressive playlist. We even danced a little.

It did not matter where we were, as long as we are together, it’s always a honeymoon!

This is so sweet. I love how you always make your anniversary special. It’s so hard to take time out for our spouses with work and kids.

It’s awesome that you celebrated at home and got the kids involved too.
